In order to garnish your checks, the creditors/collection agencies will have to file a lawsuit against you and get a judgment regarding the same. Unless they get a judgment, they won't be able to garnish your checks. Normally creditors/collection agencies may take steps to garnish your wages when you're more than 3-4 months late on your payments.
