Will my boyfriend have to get into debt for improving credit score?

My boyfriend wants to improve his credit score desperately. His credit score is in 500s. He has been advised to take out a credit card. But we are confused regarding the type of credit cards. Should he take out a secured credit card or an unsecured one? Should we open the accounts in our names? Isn’t it strange that my boyfriend will have to get into debt for increasing his credit score?

Yes, get yourself a secured credit card. THis is the best way to rejuvenate your credit score and your credit history. Maintain your finances and make timely payments to avoid a negative impact.

He has to prove he's credit worthy.  Try getting a secured card to reestablish good credit history.

Your boyfriend's credit score is too low. As such it is best to go for secured credit card. I don't think he will qualify for an unsecured credit card.
