Why has the creditor reported the item to my credit report?

I have divorced my husband in 2008. We had some joint debts before divorce. My ex-husband was held responsible for the debt. However, my ex-spouse didn’t pay a penny on the debt. Now the creditor has reported this negative item to my credit report. Why has he taken such a step? Is it legal?

He could be found in contempt of court so the possibility is there.

Can he go to jail for not following the divorce decree?

You are still legally responsible for the debt.  Divorce decrees only specify who should pay it...it wont change ownership of the debt.  You would need to haul your ex back into court to enforce the decree.
