Which letter should be sent - Verification or validation?

A collection agency has sent me a letter yesterday. The letter claims that I owe $457 on a credit card. They are collecting the debt on behalf of Citibank. I have never worked with them. Should I send a debt verification letter or a validation letter? What is the difference between the two?

As far as I know you will have to send debt validation letter to the collection agency and debt verification letter to the original creditor. The following 2 links may help you in this regard:

Since Citibank generally does not sell they paper so the agency was probably hired third party.  Call Citibank and ask them who they placed your debt with.
