My girlfriend is going to hire a debt consolidatio
My girlfriend is going to hire a debt consolidation firm to help rebuild her credit. They have told her that part of the fee she is going to pay them is for retaining a lawyer. Is the lawyer for handling the collection companies ? Is this a common practice with most debt consolidation companies? Thanks for any information you can give me.
Nobody needs to pay anyone to rebuild their credit...most of these companies are SCAMS!!!!! With a little research you can do it yourself for free! Most of the letters attorneys send out are basic dispute letters.

Some times, you might find it a bit difficult to understand the finance and debt laws in your state. Lawyers are there to help you follow any legal issue that you come across. Remember that these consolidation lawyers are more experienced in dealing with the debt consolidation process and the creditors in your state.

This is not normal for debt consolidation companies. Most consolidation companies focus on getting you a loan to pay off your debt and you repay the debt as one payment to the new lender usually backed up by your home as collateral.
But as an additional service they might be contracting out lawyers to draft letter on your behalf to send to the credit reporting agencies.

Some debt consolidation companies retain lawyers for drafting letters and sending mails to the collectors/creditors. The lawyers look after the legal aspects of the cases and give expert advice and suggestions. This help the debt consultants in dealing with the collection agencies/creditors in a better way.

Yes, there's no harm in it. The lawyer manages all the legal aspects of the debt consolidation program. He contacts the creditors through legal letters and legalises the entire process.

As far as I know, the lawyer will be there to draft formal letters which the debt consolidation company will be sending to the creditors/collection agencies. Well, in my knowledge, it is a common practice and there is no wrong in it.
