Is there any reason to hire and attorney and try to get a judgement removed from a home lein? or is the only option to settle with them, even if they are unreasonable and the cost is well over what I would expect to pay?

So you were never served?  If that's the case, I suggest you file to have the judgment set aside due to lack of service.

I did not attend any hearing, matter of fact I didnt even know about it until after it was decided.

It is very hard to get a judgment removed from a home lien. Any way, you can consult an attorney and get a free consultation on this issue.

If they've received a judgment, that means there was a court hearing.  Did you attend?  What's the judgment for?  Once a lien is placed due to a judgment, it's difficult to have it removed unless you have cause.  Disagreeing with the amount you're being charged isn't really cause.  That's something you argue in court before the judgment is awarded.
