I am thinking about trying to contact some of my creditors for settlement options. The problem is I am not behind on anything. I pay the minimum each month to try and help my credit scores. But we owe so much money. I have lots of credit card debit as well as student loans. What should be my first steps?

Do you have funds available to settle these accounts???  The point is kind of moot if you dont have the funds available.

Most creditors are not willing to settle debts unless you're delinquent on them. It is a fact. Nevertheless, you can pick up your phone and call the creditors for settling the debts. You can't settle student loan debts.

You may contact with the credit card companies and try to settle your debts on your own. Look at this page to know how to do it yourself:

Call up your creditors one by one and state that you are facing financial difficulties, try and negotiate a settlement with them. Most credit card companies and banks will initially try to offer you a hardship program and if they see that you are truly unable to pay them off, they might think of settling. Beware of the fact that some companies assume an aggressive stance when dealing with debtors and might file suit to recover the debt. Students loans are a bit of a problem simply because creditors not open to liberal negotiations.
