You sent a cease and desist to the collection agency asking for mail only. NO collection agency is going to negotiate thru the mail...they simply closed and returned the account. So, yes they can do it.
You are going to get sued. You owe the debt, American General I can assure you has copies of your prom note....they save them digitally.(I have a friend who worked there and they have been saving notes electronically for over a decade.) Your SOL was upped when you made that $400 payment.
American General interest rates are not low interest....so I am not surprised with how your balance has increased. Plus there probably was late fees as well.
True, your SOL clock was reset with the $400 payment. Many of us are not even aware of this.
