Why did the debt collector credit money into my checking account?

I too think that they might have given you a refund. It's nothing to worry about. Doesn't seem that you'll fall in further trouble.

May be they have given you a refund since your state laws prohibit a certain kind of fees.

Keep all the proofs of transaction intact. These you might need in case you are sued by the debt collector. Finally, you may consult an attorney to stay aware of what all your options are, if such a scenario takes place at a later stage.
